Linguistic Sensitivity

Anybody working in any kind of technology arena will, no doubt, be a little interested in this from snopes.com:

One such recent example included the manufacturer’s labelling of equipment where the words “Master/Slave” appeared to identify the primary and secondary sources. Based on the cultural diversity and sensitivity of Los Angeles County, this is not an acceptable identification label.

Of course one should be culturally sensitive but some words have always had multiple meanings as language has evolved. I love this fact about language that something you say today could mean something totally different tomorrow.

Movable Type Pro, Soon?

Luckily, I don’t get any spam on the pages that I have allowed comments on this site although Six Log has a nice piece on them. However, buried in that piece is the line, “Movable Type Pro (which we’ll be talking about in more detail very soon)”. Now I am excited indeed. A little sad, huh?

Bring A Smile

Sometimes, you have to smile. Although I don’t have a list of current links on this site there are, occasionally, some things I want to point you to (and to record for myself):

thesamis.net, who originally pointed me to the the Dell DJ (Digital Jukebox), posted the following:

IF A MAN COMES TO YOUR FRONT DOOR AND SAYS HE IS CONDUCTING A SURVEY AND ASKS YOU TO SHOW HIM YOUR BOOBS, DO NOT SHOW HIM YOUR BOOBS. THIS IS A SCAM. HE ONLY WANTS TO SEE YOUR BOOBS.

Then Jase points to some lovely pictures at istockphoto.com – like this guy without shirt. There is something very sexy about these pictures.

Finally, go and play Guess the Dictator and/or Television Sit-Com Character – it’s a great game and I’ve already wasted too much time playing it.

Celebrities And The Media

According to an item over at Rainbow Network, The Sun newspaper is reporting that Stephen Gately and his partner Andrew Cowles have been involved in a fight outside the London restaurant, The Ivy.

All couples have arguments and it’s sad that such a moment is deemed newsworthy. Stephen (who was Man of the Moment in September) posted an item on his message board with his version of the events, “Andy and I are absolutely fine and there is nothing at all to be concerned about” [Source].

Celebrities fight back! The power of the web to put their side of the story is fantastic and exactly what they should be using the web for. Unfortunately, the people who run Stephen’s message board slightly spoiled it with, “This subject is now closed on this board. Whilst there will no doubt be more articles over the coming days relating to this we will not be posting any more about it unless Stephen decides to do any further interviews” [Source]. Sadly, that won’t make the story go away.

Thoroughly Modern Manners

I scored 8 out of 10 in the BBC’s Modern Manners Quiz. I am not sure what that says about me except you can come to my house if you don’t mind me telling you to take your drugs outside and if you take the hint when I open a window and you light up a cigarette! I wonder if my mother would be proud of my polite ways!

If Andy Towle’s personal video (no such thing) is really made up of those short videos you can take on a digital camera – then it’s fantastic. And it’s got nothing to do with the shower shots!

RSS Feeds

I just wanted to comment once again on the excellent Bloglines service – which I thought was one of the best finds of 2003. If you’re not familiar with he concept of an RSS Aggregator then it’s worth looking a Bloglines and subscribing to some feeds. I find this is by far the fastest way to actually read why I want to read on the web. Bloglines has a clean interface and I can now read my subscriptions from anywhere on the web – which is handy if I am sat somewhere wanting to catch up on the world according to my web. It’s such a shame not quite all the blogs I want to read offer an RSS feed, although I note Blogger now offer atom feeds and I really must work on getting Listen To Musak’s atom feed sorted.

Moreover, it’s now available as a mobile channel for reading on small screens and making it far too easy to spend a lot of money on mobile bandwidth.

I have to RSS feeds available of Listen To Musak, RSS . I present full posts in my RSS feeds – I know some people only offer an excerpt of their sites but I’d rather read the whole thing and, ultimately, it saves bandwidth. If you’re only providing a highlight of an entry please think about giving us the full feed! Anyway, Happy reading.

Dannii Minogue ‘invents new dance’

Dannii Minogue accidentally started a new dance trend at an outdoor concert when she tried to alert the crowd to a capsized boat behind them.

Dannii’s attempts at raising the alarm by frantically pointing at the boat in a lake behind the audience backfired when fans thought she was performing a new dance.

After the show, Dannii said she had wanted to stop singing and shout for help, but was then relieved to see the man was safe. [Source: Ananova]

So, she was miming then?

Consumers Around Your Product

If you can build the trust of your customers it is a wonderful thing. I was about to post a link to Jason Kottke’s wonderful donut man piece (and there, I have done) but then I found this from Matt Haughey which I thought was an interesting twist:

The story of the donut man reminds us all there are two ways a business can view people crowding around their valuable products: either as thieving pirates that must be stopped at all costs, or as potential customers that can bring in a lot of money
