Resolution

I have friends who do not take part in the ‘resolutions’ game at new year. This amuses me every year because it’s a silly ritual that we go through but nobody takes it seriously. So why not just play the game with everybody? We all know you’re going to break them. I’m going to break mine and I really, really, don’t want to break them. It really doesn’t matter that you’ll break them, honestly. We won’t think any less of you because of it. Now, please, play along.

It’s pretty easy to break mine to be honest. There are only two. Diet again and exercise more. I know that at some point I will eat to excess and I’m sure I’ll find excuses to avoid the gym. Still, here we go again …

Here We Go

I’ve been quiet and I know it but it’s that time of year when there never seems to be enough hours to get everything you want done. So, while I ran off to Egypt, this whole thing took a bit of a back seat. I’ve eaten far too much over the last few days so it’s the perfect time to set myself up for the whole Gym Buddy experience again. I wonder if I’ll make it? Here’s to a great new year!

Oh, I’ve been too busy to post anything for a while so I picked this from the Flickr photo pool of a friend of a friend (type thing) because it made me laugh quite a lot. Nonetheless, I am still alive and I (as the only one who reads this) won’t be worrying about myself at all.

Now I went shopping on Oxford Street today. Something about my shopping trip was very different to Tom’s experience in San Francisco. I think it must have been a little warmer there than it was here.

Santa's gathering in Liverpool 4

How confusing could this be to some people? Thousands of people dressed as Father Christmas have run through Liverpool in a record-breaking charity bid [BBC News]. I love this. There are many interpretations of Christmas but Santa must be the one that makes the most people – across the world – smile.

Civil Partnership: It’s In The News Today

Countdown to civil partnership: According to today’s Independent reports that Sir Elton John is to “marry” his partner David Furnish in St Petersburg this month have sparked outrage among Russian nationalists [Independent].

Also in today’s Independent: Roger Lockyer and Percy Steven have been waiting 40 years for this moment. At eight o’clock in the morning on 21 December, the pensioners will become one of the first gay couples in Britain to formally register their relationship as a civil partnership. In contrast, television presenters and property designers Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan have been together for 20 years and plan to stay together for the rest of their lives but won’t have a partnership.

In The Observer, Ben Summerskill says changing the law on same-sex relationships is the easy part. Changing the culture is harder [The Observer].

Finally, The Scotsman has a nice summary of the changes in the law: The introduction of the Civil Partnership Act on Monday is expected to see 16,500 Britons register as “civil partners” by 2010. That will grant gay and lesbian couples identical rights to married, heterosexual couples, including recognition of a civil partner as the next-of-kin, rights under the rules of intestacy, if a civil partner dies without a valid will, and adoption rights – as well as the same financial provision on any dissolution.

“We are not concerned that we are missing out on wedding presents”,  says Jonathan, a graphic designer. “It is the financial and legal issues that are important to us, but we would like to know all the pros and cons before we go ahead.” [Times Online]

Now one of the things we are all wishing for is a white Christmas. It’s one of those thoughts that helps make the whole season special. Will it? Won’t it. Really, none of us want snow and does it really matter if it snows on that day? But it’s all part of the magic of the season.

Civil Partnership: Locally In Wandsworth

Countdown to Civil Partnership: Locally, eight same sex-couples are preparing to tie the knot at Wandsworth’s register office on December 21. Deputy council leader Maurice Heaster said there had been keen local interest in the new arrangements and he was sure the register office facilities would provide the perfect setting for these couples.
